2016 Conference

Speaker Reveals Coming This Week!

tomato_2014_mom's_edition_matted

The Chapter One Young Writers Conference team is thrilled to announce that we’ll be revealing our 2016 speakers here on the conference blog (www.chapteroneconference.com) beginning tomorrow (Thursday, January 14th)!

The Chapter One Young Writers Conference is a writer’s conference both for and by young writers. Ch1Con 2016 will take place Saturday, August 6th at the Hilton Garden Inn in St. Charles, IL, a western suburb of Chicago. It will include workshops, trivia (with prizes!), lots of nerding out about writing and books, and more.

We’re SO EXCITED to share our 2016 speakers with you. However, we don’t want anyone to spontaneously combust from an overload of awesomeness (these authors are so talented, it could happen)–so, we’ll be spreading out the speaker reveals throughout the rest of this week. Starting Thursday, we’ll reveal one speaker a day, leading up to our amaaazing keynote speaker on Saturday! The speaker reveals will also include some pretty awesome giveaways (if we do say so ourselves)–including signed books, a critique, and more!

So, make sure to keep an eye here on www.chapteroneconference.com to be part of the fun! And register to attend the 2016 Chapter One Young Writers Conference today at www.chapteroneconference.com/register-2016

2015 Conference

One Month!

We are now exactly one month away from the 2015 Chapter One Young Writers Conference!!

(Bear with us a sec. Dance break.)

As we count down the last thirty days until the conference, here are some quick reminders:

1.) Spaces to attend the conference are limited and they’re going fast. At the moment, we (officially) only have four spots left. (Unofficially, we can open an extra ten spots if there’s firm interest in filling them. You just have to let us know that there’s interest so that we have time to work out the details with the venue!)

2.) Directly following the conference will be a book signing with Kat Zhang and Karen Bao. If you don’t already own their books and would like to get copies signed, you can order them through Anderson’s Bookshop until Monday, July 27th and we’ll deliver them straight to you at the event.

3.) For lunch during the conference: You have a couple options. You can bring food from home and eat in the hotel lobby or courtyard (they have plenty of chairs and tables), walk to one of the nearby restaurants to get food there–OR we’ll be doing a group order to Jimmy John’s for anyone who’s interested. (We’ll gather individual orders and money from everyone who’d like Jimmy John’s at conference check-in in the morning, then have them deliver the food to the hotel. If you’d like Jimmy John’s, please have your order already figured out and your money ready when you arrive, as close to exact change as possible.)

That’s it for now! Keep a lookout for more info coming soon.

Can’t wait to see you in a month!!

What’s with the tomato?

We get this question all the time. Or, almost as frequently: “What’s with the apple?” (At which point we pulverize the person asking with our laser eyes, because those are clearly tomato leaves on that there fruit.) full tomato [for t-shirt](Also, we totally have laser eyes. Don’t question us.)

The Ch1Con logo came to be around the time we were designing the t-shirts for the 2012 conference. Because everyone attending that year had known each other for a while, we had a ton of inside jokes established. Most involved threats of bodily harm.

Is someone taking too long to send you a chapter of that new project you’re completely in love with? Chuck a bottle of Justin Bieber nail polish at her.

Did you kill off someone’s favorite character? It’s time to feel the wrath of banana poisoning and Larry the Man-Eating Hamster.

One of the longest-standing jokes we had was about tomatoes. Or, more specifically, the classic threat of throwing rotten tomatoes at a bad performer writer.

So, what better image to put on our 2012 conference t-shirts than a nice, healthy-looking tomato, right? It speaks of success, and youth, and hard work, and yes, I am completely pulling this symbolism out of my butt.

Basically what it comes down to: We drew a tomato. We liked the tomato. And it became the Ch1Con logo. (We promise our decisions generally have much more symbolic resonance.)

We hope to see you at the 2014 Chapter One Young Writers Conference!
